Field

A field — not to be confused with a field in algebra (providing the number system) — is a function that assigns values to points in space.
There are scalar fields (assigning a single value to each point in space, e.g. temperature field), vector fields (assigning a vector to each point in space, e.g. wind field), and tensor fields (assigning a tensor to each point in space, e.g. stress field in materials).
