A system becomes harmonic to the degree that the agents perceive themselves as being part of a larger agent that is more important than their personal agency.

Collective agency requires personal sacrifice.
And it requires some kind of story that is aligns the parts.

Etymology

English “sacred” comes via Middle English and Old French from Latin sacer / sacra-, meaning “holy, set apart, consecrated.”
Latin sacrificium is built from sacer (“sacred”) + facere (“to make, to do”). So literally: “a making sacred.”
… → sacrifice is the act of making something sacred, originally by offering it to a deity (i.e. something that is more important than oneself, a greater cause).
