Different (better) angle for the article:
Actually, after refreshing my embnarassingly rudimentary biology knowledge with claude, what I'm referring to is less like gut bacteria and humans, which is symbiosis:
- Separate lineages that reproduce on their own and cooperate with you only while it pays off for both sides.
- The "ASI mostly does its own thing and we coexist" scenario.
In the good timeline, what will happen is more like single cells -> multicellular organism, or bacteria -> mitochondria (handed most of their genes over to the host's nucleus and can no longer survive outside the cell (cf., on a higher level, some pets).
Integrated into a higher order individual with shared goals and subgoals at a scale no single cell can even represent (survival, maintaining the body plan, filtering toxins, fighting pathogens; which for humans will be even richer things (art, love, ... as the subgoals ... not sure what goals the superorganism will have.. apart from dynamic stability).
So yes, that'd affect us a LOT, but we'd play a part of something bigger. Right now we're more like loose colonies, tribes: Mostly local coordination, only thin threads of global coherence. The internet / communication / travel were the first step, like cell-to-cell signalling had to exist before multicellularity; how a collective organizes, and what role the individual plays in it, is constrained by its means of communication and the competencies of the individuals. We have essentially already solved the former for communication on Gaia, the latter can be greatly amplified by LLMs (everyone writes their `{GOALS, VALUES}.md`, or you just rant to your agent every now and then; it takes note, and everyone's agents negotiate policy on a global scale... this would be real democracy (of course this can't work democratically if there's a massive overhang of capital for some individuals, but neither can any system long-term, and it gets more unstable and absurd with every day of technological progress, that <insert your favourite billionaire, president, hedge fond> have such a disproportionate say on the trajectory of our species.
The literature calls this "major evolutionary transition" or "transition in individuality". Some very good reads on this / adjacent topics:

- how do you balance the scales (neighbourhood enhancements vs CERN), where are which decisions made, how can it be transparent?
