Two stages in how capital takes control of the labor process (das Kapital, Vol. 1, Ch. 16; developed further in the unpublished “Resultate des unmittelbaren Produktionsprozesses”).
Formal subsumption (formelle Subsumtion): Capital takes over an existing labor process as-is. The craftsman still does the same work the same way, now as a wage laborer under capitalist command. Only the social relation has changed: who owns the product, who appropriates the surplus. The labor process is untouched.
Die allgemeinen Bedingungen aller Produktion von Waaren vorausgesetzt, besteht die Produktion des absoluten Mehrwerths einfach in der Verlängerung des Arbeitstags über die Grenze der zum Leben des Arbeiters selbst nothwendigen Arbeitszeit, und in der Aneignung der Mehrarbeit durch das Kapital. Dieser Prozess kann vorgehn und geht vor auf Grundlage von Betriebsweisen, die ohne Zuthun des Kapitals historisch überliefert sind. Es findet dann nur eine formelle Metamorphose statt, oder die kapitalistische Ausbeutungsweise unterscheidet sich von den früheren, wie Sklavensystem u. s. w., nur dadurch, dass die Mehrarbeit hier durch direkten Zwang abgerungen, dort durch „freiwilligen” Verkauf der Arbeitskraft vermittelt wird. Die Produktion des absoluten Mehrwerths unterstellt also nur formelle Subsumtion der Arbeit unter das Kapital.

Real subsumption (reelle Subsumtion): Capital transforms the labor process itself. New methods, machinery, factory organization. The work is redesigned around surplus value extraction.

The distinction maps onto two forms of surplus value extraction:
- Absolute surplus value: lengthening the working day. Only requires formal subsumption.
- Relative surplus value: increasing productivity so the worker reproduces the value of their labour power in less time. Requires real subsumption, because the labor process must be revolutionized.
Under real subsumption, the worker is deskilled, becomes an appendage to the machine, and the separation of mental and manual labor is completed.
