Under capitalism, the intellectual content of production (planning, design, engineering, science) separates from its execution (manual labor on the factory floor). Both existed in the craftsman as one: he understood the process and carried it out. The division of labor in manufacture begins the split. Machinery completes it.
Aller kapitalistischen Produktion, soweit sie nicht nur Arbeitsprozess, sondern zugleich Verwerthungsprozess des Kapitals, ist es gemeinsam, dass nicht der Arbeiter die Arbeitsbedingung, sondern umgekehrt die Arbeitsbedingung den Arbeiter anwendet, aber erst mit der Maschinerie erhält diese Verkehrung technologisch handgreifliche Wirklichkeit. The knowledge that once belonged to the worker is absorbed into the machine and into specialized roles (engineers, managers) that serve capital’s function. The production worker retains only the physical execution. Understanding and execution, once unified in the craftsman, are now split across different roles within the working class, with the intellectual side organized in capital’s interest.
This split reinforces deskilling: workers who don’t understand the process can’t improve it, can’t bargain on the basis of irreplaceable knowledge, and can’t organize production independently. It is one of the conditions that real subsumption produces and depends on.
